The Central Única das Favelas, the National Anti-Racist Front and the Parliamentary Front of Favelas launch, on April 29th, in Complexo da Penha/Alemão, in Rio de Janeiro, the International Favela Conferences (IFC20) with the approval of G20 Social and UNESCO partnership.

With support from the government of the State of Rio, Rio City Hall, TV Globo and Trace, the meetings will map and address the demands of favelas and peripheries, in Brazil and 40 other countries, at the G20 summit next November.

After two years of intense coordination, the Central Única das Favelas (CUFA), in collaboration with the National Anti-Racist Front and the Parliamentary Front in Defense of Favelas and Respect for the Citizenship of their Residents, officially launches, next Monday, April 29th, at CUFA Complexo da Penha / Alemão, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the First International Favela Conference (CIF20).

The CIF20 will form a historic milestone and are part of the G20Social agenda, in addition to being endorsed by UNESCO. They will mark the beginning of a series of conferences in more than 3,000 favelas in Brazil, covering all 27 Brazilian states and 41 countries. These conferences, which continue until September 2024, have as their central objective to place the favela on the G20 map, bringing contributions from all regions of Brazil, the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania, organizing social and economic issues specific to these areas. territories to address them to decision makers as part of the G20 agenda.

“This initiative aims to expand communication between residents of the outskirts of all continents. Social movements from around the world have the chance to bring their agendas together and bring them to the table, where the protagonists will be the solutions proposed by everyone’, states Celso Athayde, founder of CUFA.

The axes to be debated at the conferences are the following:
1. Reducing inequalities, combating hunger and poverty;
2. Sustainability;
3. Human rights, race and gender;
4. Global challenges faced by favelas and peripheries;

For Letícia Gabriella, from the National Anti-Racist Front, CIF20 will provide the opportunity for the 20 largest powers to look at the challenges of the world’s black populations based on their reflections. “The time has come to reverse the logic, we don’t want to be guided, we want to formulate the agenda and impact the agenda of black men and women throughout the world”, she adds.

For Wellington Quaquá, leader of the Favelas Parliamentary Front congress, this is a historic moment. “The favela cannot be a supporting player, it cannot be left out of the great debates taking place in the country. Today, the front brings together more than three hundred deputies from all parties. And if a favela is not just a lack, it is a great power, as Athayde says, and I will collaborate in parliament so that this agenda is consolidated every day”, he explains.

The demands produced by the favelas and peripheries of the more than 80 cities around the world that will host the CIF20 in 2024 will be gathered by its organizers and taken to the International Favela Forum, which this year will take place in September in the city of Rio de Janeiro . This Forum is not necessarily related to the G20, but this year the two events take place at the same time and it is appropriate for the agendas to be combined.

“We are very pleased to support these initiatives that coincide with Brazil’s G20 Presidency. UNESCO’s partnership with CUFA is old, more than 20 years old and allows us to share the power of favelas with the world, contributing to the knowledge produced here being available to everyone”, declared the director and representative of UNESCO in Brazil, Marlova Jovchelovitch Noleto.

The CIF20 actions will be carried out and produced by local CUFAs and will be attended by Celso Athayde and his youngest son, Marcus Vinícius Athayde. These conferences will be divided into phases throughout the months of April, May, June and July. The first phase will take place in the following countries: Brazil (29 April), Luxembourg (5 May), Sweden (8 May), Kazakhstan (9 May), Russia (11 May), Uzbekistan (12 May), Belgium (May 13), England (May 16), Central African Republic (May 18), Democratic Republic of Congo (May 20) and Mozambique (May 22).
